it's the thought that counts

the holidays are upon us, and i have done virtually no christmas shopping.

so the other day i was trying to think of a good idea of something to get for my brother, and for lack of inspiration, i decided maybe i should check out one of those "gift guides" i keep seeing everywhere.

amazon.com's was cleverly broken down by "relationship type," but for some inexplicable reason, "brother" was not one of the relationship choices.  they did, however, include a section for "husband/boyfriend," which seemed to be the right gender, at least.

turns out amazon has got this whole "targeting" thing down pat when it comes to gift suggestions.  sections on the "husband/boyfriend" page include:
  • books on grilling
  • headlamps (like the kind you use when you're spelunking)
  • sports DVD box sets
  • magazines on beer & brewing
  • titanium jewelry
  • universal remote controllers
  • books on survial skills
  • wrenches
  • and my personal favorite: DVDs on blackmail, murder, and mayhem
it blows my mind that people get paid to put these gift guides together and yet some how manage to still compile the most utterly useless lists.  case in point, one of the suggested "for him" gifts at  instyle.com: stubbs & wootton slippers, $350

i suppose it serves me right for trying to get inspiration from... the internet.

jonathan, if you're reading this, let the record show that i have settled on a very thoughtful present for you, and i didn't get the idea from any gift guide.
